Higher Education Curriculum Development

The Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON), the Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre), and the World Maritime University-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (WMU) have joined forces to develop a higher-education curriculum on Ocean-Biodiversity Observing and Capacity Development (OBCaD). The primary aim is to develop a curriculum focused on interoperable ocean data and information management to be integrated into universities and other institutes. Importantly, this initiative is closely aligned with the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which emphasizes the urgent need for a globally accessible, reliable, and integrated ocean data and information ecosystem.

MBON Europe Data Publishing Seminar

MBON Europe held an online seminar about how to publish biodiversity data on 18th December 2023. The seminar was attended by 35 researchers interested in publishing their data, and 11 staff from LifeWatch ERIC, VLIZ (LifeWatch Belgium) and HCMR (LifeWatchGreece). Participants learned about tools for publishing biodiversity data on OBIS, GBIF and LifeWatch ERIC websites, FAIR principles, and how to publish data as papers in the Biodiversity Data Journal (for which Lifewatch ERIC pays the open-access fees).

Ocean Best Practices Workshop

MBON, Marine Life 2030, GOOS and the AIR Centre will host two special sessions at the VIII Ocean Best Practices (OBPS) workshop ranging in different time zones. These sessions we will bring together the communities contributing to Biology and Ecosystem (BioEco) ocean observation and forecasting to foster collaboration and the exchange of ideas and best practices, build capacity and promote synergies with ocean observation initiatives and projects, as well as with the overall biodiversity monitoring community, supporting common solutions for collective impact.

Uruguay Rocky Shore Monitoring Workshop

An MBON Pole to Pole Workshop for Rocky Shore Monitoring in Uruguay was held during the 1st-4th October, 20204, organized by the Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea and Areas of Influence, during a course coordinated by Karumbé and Vida Silvestre Uruguay at Santa Teresa National Park. Repeated monitoring with MBON Pole to Pole protocols will be coordinated in Uruguay by Dr. Gabriela Vélez-Rubio (FCIEN-CURE, Udelar). The monitoring focuses on capturing photo-quadrats in the rocky intertidal zone and analyzing them using deep learning tools.
