BioSound Overview

Overview The BioSound working group is composed of various scientists and stakeholders interested in producing acoustic-based data products that support marine biodiversity monitoring and conservation. BioSound is particularly interested in understanding the value of underwater soundscape metrics as indicators of biological and anthropogenic change in the context of biodiversity conservation. BioSound was formed as an initiative of the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network. Resources and tools for passive acoustic monitoring (PAM): Curated list of PAM resources and tools Annotated reference list of topical areas Goals and Objectives The goals of the BioSound working group include:

BioTrack

About BioTrack BioTrack is a collaborative project to assess and monitor biodiversity hotspots where marine species share habitat. By integrating satellite and acoustic tracking of marine animals with remotely sensed environmental data, and modeling techniques, BioTrack aims to map these biodiversity hotspots and their intersections with areas of human use and interest, such as marine sanctuaries and wind energy leasing blocks. Additionally, the project will examine the impact of future environmental variation on these hotspots and its spatial intersections of human use.

Monterey Bay Sanctuary Analysis Tools

New tools were developed by partners of the Sanctuaries MBON team in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to investigate the relationships between the ocean environment and animal communities of the Sanctuary, and to convey this information to a variety of users. Interactive infographics provide dynamic status and trend information and data-driven storytelling for use by resource managers, educators, and public constituents of the Sanctuaries. For science teams and advisory groups that need additional detail and technical capabilities, MBON is developing curated data views and map-based data discovery tools.

Sanctuary Watch - Web-Enabled Information

Web-Enabled Information for Sanctuary Management Easy access to information for tracking ecosystem conditions, human connections and management impacts are critical to timely, effective and community-based resource management. Through an exciting collaboration that leverages expertise across NOAA’s IOOS Program (including the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network), Integrated Ecosystem Assessment (IEA) Program, National Centers for Coast and Ocean Science (NCCOS) and the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS), we are developing web-based, interactive tools to track and better understand the changing nature of sanctuary ecosystems.
